I ended up using Run Length Encoding, and storing it as a list of arrays since working with binary would have been a hassle. I was barely able to eke out a 30 FPS refresh rate while dropping around 5% of frames total. Not bad, though switching to binary and/or using C instead of Micro Python would have made it easy-peasy to get the processing/writing done in well under 33 ms.
